John Sharkey, Jr, 88, of Wadsworth, passed away Friday, February 25, 2011. John was born September 13, 1922, in Springton, WV, to the late Barbara and John Sharkey.
John was employed at Babcock and Wilcox in Barberton before WWII as a welder. Upon return from military service he attended Barber College and remained in that profession throughout his working career. He owned Son and Sharkey barbershop and had many loyal customers and friends who would stop by just to chat. He was a long time member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wadsworth, a member of the Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus, and the V.F.W.
John's hobby was wood carving and he made the family many beautiful art pieces, one which was a Madonna and baby Jesus.
John and his son restored a 1931 American Austin automobile from pieces and parts acquired from all over the country. It was a real treasure hunt and sometimes was incorporated with family vacations. John would collect, fix and restore toys for children's orphanages at Christmas.
John and Betty loved their grandchildren and their Boston Terrier dogs. Both were a source of great joy, comfort, and companionship. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, as well as his brother Steve Sharkey.
John is survived by his 2 children, son John (Karen Sue) Sharkey and daughter Michele (John) Baker. He is also survived by his four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. His smiling face and charming personality will be missed by all.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8PM Wednesday, March 2, at the Hilliard-Rospert Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM Thursday, March 3, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 272 Broad St., Wadsworth with Reverend Father Joseph Labak officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wayne County or Medina County Hospice, or the Apostolic Nursing Home, 10680 Steiner Road, Rittman, OH 44270.
